A much-anticipated panel on children’s books at NYU‘s Summer Publishing Institute brought out an amazing array of publishing talent, with newly minted literary agent Brenda Bowen moderating. Included in the lineup were Ellie Berger, President of Scholastic Trade Publishing; Megan Tingley, Publisher of Little, Brown Books for Young Readers; Don Weisberg, President of Penguin’s Young Readers Group; Felicia Frazier, SVP and Director of Sales at Penguin, and Jean Feiwel, SVP and Director, Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group.Bowen began with an overview of each panelist’s background in “this bunny eat bunny world,” and then asked each speaker to make observations about the industry. Weisberg, whose focus on children’s began only a year ago after a career spent in sales and management at Random House, remarked on how many constituencies children’s publishers have to serve—including children in multiple age groups, but also extending to parents, librarians, and teachers. Frazier added grandparents to the list of powerful constituents, as they make up 25% of all children’s book buyers.

Each speaker talked not only about his or her own books, but about other authors and titles. Favorites included Jay Asher‘s Th1rteen R3asons Why (which was initially a tough sell for Penguin because it deals with teen suicide); the phenomenally successful Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which gained its following through Scholastic book clubs; and, of course, Little, Brown’s Twilight series—books that all the students seemed to have read. Megan Tingley talked about hating both romance and horror genres, but falling in love with the manuscript of Twilight on a plane trip to California . . . and the rest is history.

But everyone had their mega-successes, and Berger talked about Rick Riordan‘s 39 Clues and Suzanne Collins‘s Hunger Games series, while Feiwell discussed inventing the children’s series market with brands such as The Babysitters Club and Goosebumps. Weisberg mentioned John Green‘s ability to communicate with his readers via his own website, sparksflyup.com, and gave as an example a recent book signing, where a thousand fans showed up to see him.

In the end, everyone agreed that children’s book publishers will always have a place finding and promoting authors, regardless of which formats are used for reading in years to come. What excites this particular set of publishers is that now children’s books (which have always been a source of profit for their houses) are getting the attention they deserve. As Tingley said about her author Stephenie Meyer (who recently appeared in concert with her favorite band): “Who would have believed people would think of an author as a rock star?” But Meyer, and J. K. Rowling, John Green, and others have proven that while you can’t make the book jacket too sexy (or scary), it doesn’t mean their authors aren’t cool.

Will Kiester is returning to the US after 18-months in Australia at Murdoch Books, to become Publisher of Fairwinds Press, an imprint of Rockport Publications. Previously, He had been at Quarto.

Kaylee Davis’ position at Bookspan’s Children’s BOMC/KBP was eliminated in a reorganization. The company has decided to focus the club in a more educational direction, and it now will be run by the professional clubs. She may be reached at kndavis@optonline.net

Effective in January, Basic Books’ JoAnn Miller is “transitioning” out of her role of VP, Editorial Director to Editor at Large. Miller approached Perseus CEO David Steinberger with this “about a month ago,” Miller told PT.

Granta will open a New York office next year, according to The Bookseller. Run by Matt Weiland, currently Deputy Editor of Granta magazine (who will also take on the role of Associate Publisher in the US), Granta is published in association with Grove/Atlantic and distributed to the trade by PGW in the US. Weiland is moving back to New York in January 2007, where he will combine his deputy editorship of the magazine with overseeing its American launch and its spin-off anthologies. He will work initially out of the Grove/Atlantic offices before looking to open a separate office.

As announced elsewhere, Katie Workman, Associate Publisher of Workman, will be leaving at the end of the year. Perhaps in another sign of the parlous cookbook times, Chris Pavone is leaving Workman’s Artisan imprint after just over a year at the company. Last month, cookbook maven Harriet Bell left HarperCollins.

After a short stint at Ingram Publisher Services, Sally Hertz has left the company and has gone back into consulting. She may be reached at BookPublish2@aol.com. . . . Christine Jones has joined S&S as non-trade Sales Director. . . . John Niedhart joined DK as the B&N National Accounts Sales Manager. He has held editorial positions at O’Reilly Media and Addison Wesley and previously had worked at B&N.

Virgin Books has established a U.S. branch with offices in New York City and Ken Siman has been named Publisher, reporting to K.T. Forster, MD of Virgin Books. Siman was VP, Editor, and Publicity Director of Tarcher/Penguin.

Consortium CEO Don Linn, who bought Consortium in 2002, will continue to play “a key role” in the transition until January 1, when he will leave the company. He may be reached at DLinn@cbsd.com.

Farah Miller, Manager of New Media is leaving Knopf for Modern Bride magazine. . . . Laura Quinn, Assistant Director, Domestic Rights at Crown has left the company.

Among the 25 or so Random House sales employees who lost their jobs in the recent cut are Bruce Dasse (203.453.4294), and Marita Yogore, along with reps in the field and sales management people in the New York office.

Diane Reverand has left St. Martin’s after four years there. She may be reached at Dreverand@earthlink.net. . . and Ben Sevier has left St. Martin’s for Touchstone Fireside, where he is be a senior editor.

In a recent article, PW refers to The Children’s Book Council (CBC)’s new Executive Director, Robin Adelson, who was a former associate general counsel at Primedia Inc. He will work out of the 1271 Ave. of Americas office, and report to Bill Gatti, SVP Human Resources. Speaking of WSJ, Dominick V. Anfuso has been named vice president, editorial director of the Free Press, S&S Source and Wall St. Journal Books, reporting to Martha Levin.

Dorchester has announced that George Sosson is the new President and Publisher, following Lisa Rasmussen’s departure earlier in the month. She may be reached at 917 886-2561. . . Thea Feldman, GVP and General Manager of the books division at Sesame Workshop, has left the company. She may be reached at 212 989-5330. . .
Speaking of children’s publishing, Willa Perlman has joined the Cheyenne Group, a consulting firm with headquarters in New York. She will work from her Rhode Island home. . . Steve Cohen, most recently CEO of Brainquest.com, is the latest addition to The Popular Group, the company recently launched by Jack Hoeft.
VIRTUAL PEOPLE

Lucinda Karter (in the New York Office) and Nick Webb (in London) have left Rightscenter, though no announcements have been made.

JUNE DATES

Pat Schroeder will be honored by the UJA on June 6th at the Grand Hyatt. Contact Marcy Frank at 212 836-1448.

• The Licensing Show is back in town, June 11–14, at the Javits Center. Golden Books, Scholastic, and Hungry Minds are among those exhibiting. Call 800 331-5706 for more information about the show.

• The ALA Annual Convention is in San Francisco this year, June 14–20.

• Michael Cader’s next Live Lunch in NY on June 20 is a “Legal Lunch,” on the subjects of contracts, electronic licensing, and the complexities of copyright. Trident Media’s Robert Gottlieb and attorneys Ken Norwick (who represents then AAR) and Helene Godin are the speakers. To reserve, email michael@caderbooks.com.

DULY NOTED

Publisher presence at the Premium Incentive show was minimal — which presented a fine opportunity for the smaller ones who were there, such as Trafalgar Square, Kensington, and World Almanac — all of whom said business was booming. A possible indication of the downward trend in business generally, and books specifically, might have been seen at the booth Buyenlarge.com, a poster company run by Paris Pierce — 25% owned by B&N.com. They had been developing a very successful program with BN.com selling classic book jackets as posters or reduced and suitable for framing. This business has now been successfully transformed from one selling art to one selling chocolate. From Harry Potter to To Kill A Mockingbird, you can buy your chocolate bars suitably encased.

PARTIES

May, traditionally a busy pub party month, began with a signing and party at the Madison Avenue Bookstore, thrown by David Godine to honor William Zinsser, not for On Writing Well, but as the author of a book about American songwriters, Easy to Remember. May also marked the first time the UJA honored a German, Thomas Middelhof. The occasion was the annual Steven J. Ross dinner and there was a large crowd, though very few publishers. (The Entertainment, Media & Communications Division hosted this $1000 per ticket event, rather than the Publishing Division, whose tickets go for a relatively modest $600.) Although all the music industry luminaries were there, other than Peter Olson and some Random House execs, no other publishers were present. They’re undoubtedly saving their pennies for the June 6th dinner honoring AAP’s Pat Schroeder.

Otto Penzler and Herman Graf threw a party for his author, Joyce Carol Oates, at the Players Club on May 22. Guests included NY DA Robert Morthenau and wife, Lucinda Franks, Russell Banks, Edmund White, and Gloria Vanderbilt. The same evening DK Publishing and The New York Times celebrated the publication of Campaigns: A Century of Presidential Races, by Ted Widmer and Alan Brinkley, at the Times. And the Janklow & Nesbit Agency launched the BEA with a party at their offices on May 29 for international publishers, from Leonardo Mondadori to Shona Martyn of HC Australia to a substantial Japanese contingent who then got on their planes for Chicago.

MAZELTOV

Congratulations to Three Rivers Press’s Becky Cabaza and Broadway’s Charlie Conrad on the birth of their first child, a boy, Carlos Patrick Conrad on 23rd May.

Congrats also to Norton’s Louise Brockett and husband Mark, on the birth of twin boys John Duley and Thomas Wadsworth on May 25.
