At Atria, Lindsay Sagnette will join as VP, Editorial Director on September 10. She was previously Editorial Director for Fiction at Crown and helped launch both Hogarth and Sarah Jessica Parker for Hogarth. Caitie Hawthorne also joins Atria as Associate Editor for Julia Cheiffetz’s yet-unnamed imprint. She was most recently Researcher at NBC News.

At Bloomsbury Children’s, Annette Pollert-Morgan joins as Editorial Director, having worked previously in that position at Sourcebooks Fire.

Jen Keenan joins Macmillan Children’s as Art Director for Farrar, Straus Children’s and Roaring Brook Press. She was most recently Associate Art Director at Little, Brown Children’s.

At Abrams, John Passineau joins as Associate Art Director, Calendars and Children’s Licensing. He worked previously as Designer at Workman.

Pam Bobowicz joins Workman Children’s as Senior Editor, moving over from her previous role as Executive Editor at Abrams. In addition, Maria Elias joins as Associate Art Director. Previously she was Senior Designer at Disney-Hyperion.

Ben LeRoy, founder and former publisher of Tyrus Books, has been hired as Executive Director of the Independent Publishers Caucus (IPC). Additionally, Veda Kamra joins as Staffer. Both will work for the first year on a part-time basis.

At Random House, Stacy Horowitz joins as Partnerships Manager. She was most recently Senior Publicist at Hay House.

Karen Auerbach, Director of Publicity at Kensington, has departed her role after eleven years in order to pursue “new adventures.”

Matthew Barblan joins the Association of American Publishers (AAP) as VP, Public Policy on August 27. Most recently he was Executive Director of George Mason University’s Center for the Protection of Intellectual Property and Assistant Professor of Law.

Mick Silva joins Zondervan as Senior Acquisitions Editor, Nonfiction Trade. He worked most recently as Editor at WaterBrook Multnomah.

Cheryl A. Young is retiring from her position as Executive Director of the MacDowell Colony, which she has held since 1997. She will remain until her successor is in place in early 2019.

At Scribd, Suzannah Bentley joins as Content Acquisition Associate. She was formerly Foreign Rights Coordinator at Janklow & Nesbit.

In agency news…MacGregor Literary now operates as MacGregor & Luedeke as Amanda Luedeke becomes Partner. Tom Miller has joined Liza Dawson Associates as Senior Agent; he was previously Agent at Carol Mann Agency.

At Chronicle, Maggie Haas joins as Website and Ecommerce Coordinator. Previously she was MuseumStore Customer Service Assistant at SFMOMA.

 

PROMOTIONS

At Hachette Book Group, Todd McGarity has been promoted to VP, Business Development.

Sarah Cardillo has been promoted to Director, Publishing Operations at Sourcebooks.

At Macmillan Children’s, Beth Clark has been promoted to Creative Director for Roaring Brook Press and Farrar, Straus Children’s, while Andrew Arnold moves up to Art Director for First Second. At St. Martin’s Press, Rachel Diebel is now Assistant Editor.

Kristine Enderle has been promoted to Editorial Director of Magination Press, the American Psychological Association’s children’s imprint. Additionally, Sarah Fell has been promoted to Senior Editor.

At Prometheus Books, Lisa Michalski has been promoted to Senior Publicist and Marketing Associate, while Jake Bonar moves up to Publicist and Marketing Associate.

With the promotion of agent Sean Daily, Hotchkiss & Associates changes its name to Hotchkiss Daily & Associates.

 

IN MEMORIAM

Carie Freimuth, longtime publishing colleague and friend, died Sunday at the age of 55 after a long battle with a rare cancer. Carie held various positions at Random House, Harper, and finally the WaterBrook imprint at RH after she and her husband John Hughes (also a RH alumnus) moved to Colorado to start a family. She is survived by John and their son Joseph, now 15.

 

DULY NOTED

Shambhala Publications’ previously-announced children’s imprint, Bala Kids, will now debut in spring 2019 rather than this fall. Sam Bercholz, son of Shambhala’s founder, now co-owns the publisher with his sister, Sara. Ivan Bercholz will be publisher of the line, and Juree Sondker will serve as Editorial Director.

Chronicle Books is partnering with Trustbridge Global Media to create Chronicle Bridge, an imprint that will publish and distribute Chinese-language editions of select Chronicle children’s books. The imprint launches at the Beijing International Book Fair and will aim to publish twenty titles a year, with five debuting in August 2018. Inaugural titles include Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site and Steam Train, Dream Train.

Hudson Group, which operates Hudson News and Hudson Booksellers, is opening a bookstore with McNally Jackson in LaGuardia Airport’s revamped Terminal B.

Nebraska Book Holdings and Follett Higher Education Group have announced a new partnership. Nebraska Book Holdings will take on Follett’s individually managed store accounts through their wholesaling services division, and Follett will shift its focus from physical wholesale services to Follett Marketplace and Valorebooks.com. Follett purchased Nebraska Book Holdings’ retail division, comprising about 200 college bookstores, in 2015.

The University of Massachusetts Press has begun selling and marketing Tagus Press titles as well as its scholarly journal, with distribution to be provided by Hopkins Fulfillment Services. Tagus will retain its editorial offices in Dartmouth, MA, and UMass Dartmouth faculty will continue oversight of the editorial program. Tagus was previously distributed by the University Press of New England, which is closing.

Ingram Publisher Services has added eight publishers as distribution clients: Anthology Editions, Trope Reader, Gestalten, Gingko Press, Grim Oak Press, Hanser Publications, The Institution of Engineering and Technology, and The International Society for Technology in Education.

Beginning in January 2019, Publishers Group West will distribute Heyday, currently distributed by Book Travelers West, and Hopkins Fulfillment Services will begin distributing Wesleyan University Press.
